  2. First and foremost, however this game plays out I think the Magic will provide the Cavs a tougher matchup in the conference finals.

    I’m still rooting for Marbury, Doc, and Ray Allen but a depleted Celtics squad will not match up as well as the Magic in the next round.

    have also swept! Celtics get by the Magic tonight
    and beat the Cav’s easy! Then on to get their azz kicked
    by DENVER!Yes…Denver 2009 NBA Champs!

  5. I’ll join the LBE fray tonight.

    I”d love to see Denver make it to the Finals.

    But with the script play out to favor LA in the next series.

    To be realistic, Kobe won’t face the same sort of pressure from the Nuggets wingmen defenders as he did from Battier and Artest. The Lakers will have been tested coming out of this round of the playoffs and will not be as rusty as the Nuggets who have several days off.

  6. From Berman: Stephen Curry, according to his ESPN Radio interview last night, is reading the “Seven Seconds or Less” book on Mike D’Antoni’s Suns. It’s the closest thing Curry has to the Knicks playbook. Curry sounds like he can’t wait to be a Knick and play in that system. I’m sure Curry is hoping the Knicks don’t hit the jackpot at Tuesday’s lottery and stick at 8.)

    If we stick at 8,it may be a blessing. To all those
    not convinced, I think you’ll own a Curry Jersey after
    next years first 10 games.

    DENVER (AP) — When Anthony Carter first heard that Nuggets Coach George Karl was talking about a defense-first philosophy after two seasons of running up scores, he was a bit skeptical.

    Coach George Karl has restored a defensive emphasis, and the addition of Chauncey Billups has Denver in its first conference finals since 1985.

    “To tell you the truth, I didn’t think we would really do it because he’s said that before and then when we needed some scoring, the defensive guys went back to the bench,” Carter said, chuckling. “But I’m glad we stuck with it this year.”

    The Denver Nuggets are in the Western Conference finals for the first time since 1985. They will play the Los Angeles Lakers, who defeated the Houston Rockets on Sunday, 89-70, in Game 7 of their second-round series. Game 1 is Tuesday in Los Angeles.

    The change in Karl’s thinking took place during a tumultuous off-season that started with the Nuggets’ fifth straight first-round playoff exit and continued with the departures of the defensive stalwarts Marcus Camby and Eduardo Najera and the assistant coaches Doug Moe and Mike Dunlap.

    Before Camby and Najera were out the door, Karl’s right-hand man, Tim Grgurich, convinced him that he had to return to his roots.

    Mark Warkentien, who was named the league’s executive of the year, did his part by signing two big bargains in Chris Andersen and Dahntay Jones. Then came the trade of Allen Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, who has helped transform the Nuggets into contenders.

    Kenyon Martin said he bought into Karl’s approach immediately.

    “Just look at it, if you want to be successful in any sport, no matter if it’s individual or a team sport, you’ve got to do something else besides what you do best,” Martin said Saturday. “We always knew we could score. Shoot, we’re top three in the league in scoring for the last five years.

    “But we’ve been in the bottom in defense all those years as well. So, you’ve got to fix it. How do you fix it? You get in the gym and work at it. And that’s what we did every day in training camp, and we got good at it.”

    Karl said losing Camby was not the impetus for the team’s shift in focus. Camby’s departure began what Karl calls “the mope period,” after the Nuggets were eliminated from the playoffs.

    Karl said he realized “maybe I took too much of a risk” in preaching an offense-first philosophy for the first time in his life.

    So, in the Nuggets’ summer league, “the whole game was defense,” Karl said.

    “Everything went back to the old-school drills, the shell drills, all the rotation drills, all the old-school stuff we had done in Seattle,” Karl said. “We talked to everybody about it — then the trades hit.”

    Camby was gone. Then Najera.

    “That was kind of a funky period from mid-July to the first week of August, everybody was cussing and moaning,” Karl said.

    Soon, he and Grgurich divvied up what remained of the roster and reached out to the veterans. Nene was not happy about his role changing or Camby’s leaving, but Karl soon swayed him.

    “I said, ‘Nene, you’ve gone from an overpaid bench player to an underpaid star in one trade,’ ” Karl said. “ ‘You’re not going to be able to do this with your habits. If you want this culture to change, you’ve got to help me. The first way you help me is get in the gym.’ ”

    Starting Aug. 15, Nene was in the gym five hours a day. Karl said he had thought Martin would be just as hard to convince as Nene was, but Martin jumped right on board.

    “As soon as we got back here we met and he said, ‘You’re not going to have any problem with me. I’m going to be your leader,’ ” Karl said of Martin.

    Without the money to hire a seasoned staff, the Nuggets turned to the young assistants Jamahl Mosley, John Welch and Chad Iske, who quickly proved that they, too, were ready. And then came Billups.

    “The culture was changing before Chauncey came,” Karl said. “And then Chauncey comes and here’s the spokesperson for everything I was basically saying.”

    First thing that needs to change is the bullshyte attitude that D don’t count in NYC.That’s just crazy.If that’s what you want to do then coach in the Entertainers League or go back to Europe where D is only a letter in front of your last name.The last team standing in the NBA is never guilty of D’UI, Defense’Un-Intended.Until Mike sees the light, we’ll be playing grab-azz in Mr. Stern’s Neighborhood.We suck and will continue to suck no matter what rookie you bring in.Rookies don’t change shyte!Get us a vet like Chauncey to help guys who will play some D,like Duhon and Chandler.Shooters in this league are a dime a dozen, they should come off the bench, winners are a different story.By the way, congrats to Doc and the sis-C’s, kidding they hit hard, on a brilliant season.Hate the C’s guts but they played hard and smart, especially with their injuries.And they did it with DDDDDD.Honestly,when Doc becomes available, and eventually he will, we need him here in NY.He coaches the game the “right way”.Kudos to his coaches as well, love seeing Clifford Ray passing on that wisdom.That said I hope KG gets well and loses every single quarter of every single game to NY next season.Speaking of losing, if E.Curry ever loses any weight there could be a spot waiting for him in Houston as Yao’s back up.They need one and if he can play at least one way, besides bad, that might work for them.Yao only plays one way anyway and the Rockets are used to helping out in the middle.Griffin or Thabeet could probably help us.We’re to small anyway.But rookie guards take time, even if they are super talented and their last name is Rose.So, let us bow our heads and pray for world peace and maybe a one or two pick.Oh yeah, let us also pray for some D next year other than the two D’s in front of the brothers you-know-who and the grade they get for losing at least ten games they should have won.LGK
