Is Sessions Receiving An Offer From The Wolves? Updated: The Answer Is “Yes.”

Update: The Wolves and Ramon Sessions agree to a 4 year, $16 million contract. After being forsaken by Tricky Ricky Rubio, GM David Kahn quickly went to plan ‘B’ and pulled point guard Sessions out of free agency purgatory.  Sessions, widely considered the best young point guard available in the free agent market, reportedly had been courted by the Knicks and Clippers.  However, the Knicks who committed themselves to chasing free agents in 2010, clearly know that they barely have the cap space dollars to get a maximum salary free agent and a decent support staff for the likes of a LeBron James or Dwyane Wade.   The Knicks’ summer ends with rejection and dejection as they miss out on point guard after point guard in their effort to upgrade the starting PG position.  However, this leaves a great opportunity for draft pick Toney Douglas to show that he can be the Knicks’ leader of the future (if not the leader for tomorrow).

As Auggie mentioned in the comment section last night, Fanhouse and ESPN are reporting that David Kahn, after being spurned by Ricky Rubio, is prepared to tender an offer sheet to free agent Ramon Sessions.  As we know, the summer has been filled with unsubstantiated and unrealized rumors, but if Sessions winds up with the Timberwolves or the Clippers, it raises more questions regarding the effectiveness of Walsh’s 2010 Plan for Building A Contender In 20 Years.  Are you satisfied with Walsh’s summer moves?

  1. If Walsh let’s Sessions get away, then the Knicks will have wasted a whole summers opportunity to upgrade the point guard position on the team. D’Antoni will likely need to play Duhhon again for 40 plus minutes per game and get burned-out by mid-season. Douglas may improve over time but strikes me as currently too new to take over the point even as a back uo. I assume that N8 will be signed but his point guard skills pale by comparison to Sessions and N8 is better as a 2 guard off the bench to provide energy and enthusiasm.

    Walsh’s fixation on “cap space” and his 2010 fantasy obsession prevents him from seeing the hopeless scenario he is creating right now and despair he is causing, not only among more astute fans, but also I believe among the Knick players and, I imagine, within the Knick organization itself. Walsh needs to read Moby Dick to see how obsession binds and blinds.

      The other day I inadvertently checked into the Knicksdefense, at http://www.knicksdefense.com, blog.

      That blog spoke about Walsh intelligently holding the line at an offer sheet to Sessions starting at 4 million per year. Seems that supposed line didn’t exist at all.

      Now the TWolves might have another up and coming point guard while the Knicks wait for the turtle with tunnel vision and, I might add DEMENTIA, to actually do something to build a team that entices star free agents.

    Be patient. Donnie knows what he is doing. He has a track-record in the draft. Twenty-two years ago fans in Indiana wanted Steve Alford and Donnie drafted Reggie Miller. When others misjudged Al Harrington’s talent, Donnie has traded for him twice and he is now the Knicks go to guy.

    People thought Donnie would not be able to trade Stephen Jackson, but he was able to get Mike Dunleavy & Troy Miller (for Harrington & Jackson). They said he could not trade Artest. He traded Artest for Pedro’s expiring contract and nothing else.

    Donnie has a plan. He was able to hire a successful coach in D’Antoni. Look what D’Antoni has done. You guys need faith

  7. Once again I agree with States. Donnie is due for another great transaction. He’s been working up to it for 22 years. Just wait. Donnie is patient not a patient at the Cuckoo’s Nest, O&B.

    Auggie, don’t bust a vessel man!! Blood is hard to wipe off the blog facade. Two things I disagree with. The Celtics did not build a team using cap space which is what Donnie is trying to do. His major move was a trade of his homegrown talent for Garnett. Ray Allen was also acquired in a trade, not free agency. You are right that champs rise through home grown talent. What made the Celtics different is that they dumped most of theirs (save Pierce).

    If Donnie Walsh was serious about his plan, he would be all wrong. You can’t build a Champion with free agency as the base. You must be smart/lucky in the draft and savvy with use of cap exceptions and trades. I bet Donnie knows that. I agree that he is trying to make up for all that cash Dolan lost to Jerome James, Marbury, Eddie Curry, Isiah Thomas, Anucha Browne, Larry Brown and others we don’t know about. I don’t blame Dolan for screwin’ the fans to save money — I blame him, Stern and Walsh for lying about it.

    Secondly, once a Knick champion, always a Knick Champion. Remember Earl the Pearl was a star before he crossed over without a bullet. He is a Knick.

    There are others, but my favorite was Dave Debusschere who spent his first six years with the Pistons (as player and coach) before he came here. I remember him well because I lived near Comiskey Park in Chicago and he was a notable reliever when baseball was really baseball. (He was a two-sport star ala Neon Deion). DO you think of Dave as a Pistons, since he was a Detroit boy, or do you think of him as a Knick? I think of him as a Knick (and a White Sox).

    Jerry Lucas can also be added, along with Dave Debusshere and Earl Monroe, to the list of Knick stars acquired by trades. Although all made a significant impact, there was, nevetheless, a core group previously intact acquired via the draft: Willis Reed, Clyde Frazier, Bill Bradley, Cazzie Russell, and Phil Jackson, all of whom forged solid team cohesion prior to the arrival of the others.

    Walsh seems to be doing his best to alienate or ultimately eliminate all prior draft choices (except his own: Gallo, Hill and Douglas)taken by Isiah: Lee, N8, Chandler and Balkman (last year. The other players acquired by Isiah through trades Q, and Malik Rose are gone; Curry and Jeffries acquired by free agency will also be moved out as soon as possible. Walsh may have to wait until 2011 to move the latter, but rest assured he will wait and wait.

    Yet what kind of core will remain to fill the great empty “cap space” being created? The mercenary stars to be purchased beginning July 2010 will have to ask themselves what kind of “team” are they joining? Harrinton, Darko Gallo, Hill and Douglas (and no No 1 draft pick in 2010) is a team? I do not see the superstars in a rush to join up no matter how much gold Walsh dangles out there. And if one the elite (Lebron, Bosh, Wade, Melo) are so enticed, he would likely eat up so much cap space for so many years there would be little left to attract much of anything else. So what team cohesion can happen if one player is paid vast sums of millions more than the others, and thus becomes the center of attention while the others stand around watching?

    The sooner Cablevision can unload Madison Square Garden (including the Knicks and Rangers) to hopefully some wiser ownership, the sooner we can rid the Knicks of Dolan, Walsh and company. Now that day will be one of real Jubilee-not the July 1, 2010 date of false hope now marked on Walsh’s calendar.

      So once again I co-sign and formulate here that the NYK strip-down is on. It begin with the IT and Mills ouster. Those two had the NYK at its highest point (in terms of value) and any hater can look at the Forbes list from the time those two were at the helm. The whispered truth about Turtle Walsh is that he brings in experience as a three-headed guy who could handle the BBall, MSG, and Radio City side of Cablevision. With Turtle Don, Dolan was able to package Teflon Steve AND the Lil’ General (0-star).

      Now, Steady blogin’ with no inside intel (other than Peaceman conspiracies) and no connects (other than Cooley MD), Steady states that the new buyer and price for the NYK are already known. What we don’t know is when the deal will go down (it may be next month and it may be next year). The Lil’ General WILL NOT allow foreclosures on his watch so the NYK AND Bobcats won’t be moved in the same fiscal year. Add the to the pickle barrel the acidic state of the financial market–the price of capital (when available) is still too high. If one was to look at the NYK value today it would be a shell of itself: how many contracts held? how many max (H2O’s rolled off the books)? The renovations on Mecca are forestalled while the suits look for foreclosure options. The same game of stripin’ for profits happened to Steph and to Marcus Camby before him.

      Maybe Statesman1 and Statesman 2 are right (ITongue in cheek). Maybe Turtle Don does know what he’s doing. There’s a lot at stakes here and its more than just player movement and running Technic(Al) out there with some no-news about a Sprewell re-dux in Stephen Jackson.     One of the benefits of upgrading the point guard position for the coming year was to generate more wins, get in the playoffs, and thus become more appealing to FAs. There is not a 2010-Draft Choice. This was traded as part of the Steph deal.

    When this deal becomes a high lottery pick the media will blame Isiah and not recall that Donnie gutted the team from last year, made poor personnel decisions, and put the team in position to win 20-25 games under the facade of “clearing cap space for 2010”.

    Remember Donnie is “One of Us”

    I fully agree with what could have been your plan. I would also be sure to retain Lee, Robinson and Chandler to build upon some team identity and cohesion. There would also be a chance to make a trade sometime this year for a no. 1 draft choice in 2010 and still have a team making progress in 2009 – 10. Sessions would have enabled us to prevail against a number of teams and compete for the playoffs, which, as DLT notes, could only enhanced our attrativeness to a all star looking to help attain a championship ring. Sessions, moreover, at 23 will only get better. Alas, Walsh’s fixation on “cap space” leaves only a an empty void–a team with players on one or two year contracts waiting for Walsh to axe their heads and with no guarantee that if you play well (see D Lee) you get rewarded.

    Shifting to a another but related thought: GM David Kahn of the Timberwolves has really stuck it to Walsh this summer. (1st.) Kahn outbid Donnie for the 5th pick in the draft –which Walsh wanted (enough to offer Chandler) from the Wizards. (2nd). He drafted Rubio whom the Knicks would have taken if available at the 8th spot. 3rd. He snatched Sessions simply by extending the length of Walsh’s contract
    offer. Moreover, Kahn retains Rubio’s NBA rights and will look to trade him within the next two years to a team other than the Knicks. [Hahn reports that the Knicks have nothing that Kahn wants]. I read that to mean Walsh is to be further punished. What did Walsh do to Kahn in their past association to reap such payback?
    3rd.

      So where does that leave us now.NO FA signings this summer.No new PG which (since the management put it out there) is an area that needs improving.Now you’re telling ALL the 2010 FAs that we need help at the PG and did nothing to improve.

      Now Walsh wants to trade for Rubio(again) meaning waiting 2 years(not one, when we need it in 2010) for an unproven PG.This “Turtle” is losing any hope of making a champion and what if LBJ doesn’t come? At best he plays the same position as our best 2 player(Chandler and Gallo).

      Who is option number 2?Shouldn’t we build a team around a superstar,not just let the superstar jump in a bad situation?Who will want to come…38 year old Steve Nash?
      This stinks!!!

  14. the KNICKS have not had a good steady point guard on their team for as long as i can remember,back in the earlt 90’s they drafted MARK JACKSON,another player who you could grow a team with.but after he won ROY AWARD they traded him,which began a point guard parade STRICKLAND,CHEEKS,RIVERS,HARPER,WARD,CHILDS(am i missing someone?)maybe if we had one point guard(JACKSON)in the 90’s we would have pulled out a championship or 2.another reason we shoulda signed sessions

    Regarding our Knicks, I have said it before and I will say it again, “The Race is not given to the swift, neither to strong, but to those that endureth to the end.” As crazy as it seems, I believe DW has charted the right course by being patient and is STABLIZING THE FRANCHISE for a myriad of reasons. Market Value is always a point of contention when a franchise is owned BY A MAJOR CONGLOMERATE. Sports is a corporate bastion where profits & loss is the rule. Sports is one of those vertical markets that does bend quickly to the winds of the economy or geo-political events. Just turn on your TV, stadiums are full, arenas are packed, the fields of dream are thriving at unbelievable rates. ANd, sponsors and advertisers aren’t junping ship like a caucus meeting for the Glen Beck Show.

    Secondly Fanatics, Rome was not built in a day, and nor will a championship team in NYC… Making moves for the sake of following others is a foolish recipe our franchise has experience over the last 4 t 5 years, and look where we are now. STABILIZATION Gents is the prudent course and never over pay for assets who’s value will decline when the Bright Lights of NYC shine upon you…Think I’m BSing, just ask the Giants about PLAX. Their saviour, all of his money was not guaranteed…And look at him now as he prpepares to do the Hokey Pokey in Buttsville USA…

    Patience is a virtue and I believe the best is yet to come.
